If the structure of your deck is good and sturdy, but you don’t like the appearance of your deck, you have the option of refurbishing it, or "re-decking."
Generally, renovating a deck will save the home owner money, but you have to make sure the foundation is sound.
“It’s like putting a new body on an old car," says Decks R Us Foreman Amos. “The appearance of the car looks great, but underneath is it a piece of junk that will probably give out real soon. Re-decking may not be that smart if your structure is no good. You’d be putting our material - some with a lifetime warranty - on a structure that is already 20 years old and won’t last another 6 or 7 years. Seems kind of pointless to go to that expense and effort.”
If your deck's structurally sound, you could save 15-20% over the total cost of the new deck.
John,How do I know if I Should Re-Deck/Refurbish?
We just wanted to let you know how satisfied we are with your company and product. As we were picking materials, we saw another deck with almost identical materials to what we eventually chose.
The workmanship and artistry that Decks R Us put into our project put our deck into another league from what we had seen. Wow!
Thanks again,John F.
(We didn’t list their full names here on the site, but let us know if you want to talk these folks or any of our other past customers.)
If you are going to change the shape of the structure, or add onto it, in most cases it’s cheaper to build new. If you want to add 10 feet to the front for example, we know how to add another beam, add an extra joist to give you more space and make it long lasting. But if you want to add onto the side, or change the shape, you probably will spend more money on refurbishing it.

- Your joist needs to be spaced 16 inches on center.
- You have inspected it and it is rot/decay free.
- None of the joist sag.
- As a rule of thumb: under 15 years, most structures should be good.
- Over 15 years, give it a real thorough inspection.
Make 100% sure your framing is good.
You must have a strong foundation for re-decking.
Make sure your posts are 6 x 6 and have concrete footers
Our re-decking projects include the stairs, steps, rails
and the deck flooring.
Our re-decking jobs always include ensuring the existing
framing is up to code.
We usually cover the existing exterior framing with composite
trim to match your new decking.
Along with resurfacing the deck and replacing the rails, we
inspect to make sure that it is in compliance with any of the newer codes that
have come out in your area.
If your deck wasn’t built professionally the first time, we
may be able to prolong it’s life and fix mistakes like adding a joist hanger or
installing new lags into the wall.
